As a college freshman, I had the opportunity to volunteer for Congressman John Spratt’s 2010 re-election campaign. He was a man of great character and was always very kind and approachable. My prayers and condolences are with his family and many friends. See MoreSee Less

Saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend and mentor, State Senator Kay Patterson. I became personally acquainted with Senator Patterson as a 15-year-old NAACP activist and admired his grit, wit, determination, and principled leadership. Senator Patterson’s life was one that exemplified public service: a military veteran, community leader, former public-school teacher and principal, State Representative and State Senator. For 93 years, Senator Patterson gave it all that he had to give and made our community and state a better place. Senator Patterson always fought for the “least of these” those who were hungry, thirst, sick, imprisoned, or homeless. He never became consumed with title nor position. To Senator Patterson, it didn’t matter if you were the President of the United States or a small child – he would treat you like you were somebody. You could find him in his neighborhood picking up litter or out in the community giving back. As an elder statesman, Senator Patterson exemplified what it meant to work for the people and not self-interest. Following my first election to the State House of Representatives in 2018, I was honored when Senator Patterson graciously agreed to administer the oath of office to me. I count it a blessing to have learned from one of the best. I count it a blessing to know that he believed in me. I count it a blessing to walk and now lead in the path that he blazed. Rest well, my dear friend. I’ll see you in the morning. See MoreSee Less
